If you’re a fan of fast, affordable small cars, you’ve come to the right place. Handsome and blessed with terrific handling, the Focus ST is great to drive and comes in a choice of surprisingly practical body styles. No compromises required.
From the enlarged, mesh-covered grille to the large rear spoiler, lots of sporty details set the ST apart from its more mainstream counterparts. It sits on unique 18-inch Y-design alloy wheels and is dressed with a special body styling kit. Rear parking sensors come as standard to help you keep the paintwork in showroom condition.
Top-of-the-range ST-3 models come with red brake callipers, and black roof rails come on the estate version.
Ford knows that many Focus ST owners need a family car that’s as practical as it is potent. That’s why it features the same basic cabin as the standard Focus.
The ST includes lots of details to set it apart, though. There are three versions of the ST – simply named 1, 2 and 3. The entry-level 1 includes air conditioning, Recaro sports seats in the front, a bespoke leather-trimmed steering wheel and gearstick.
Sports-tuned suspension ensures the Focus ST turns into corners with brio, making it a joy to drive fast down twisting country roads and through tight city streets. It’s seriously fun when you want it to be, yet is a comfortable cruiser if you’re carrying a family.
Two spirited yet frugal engines mean you needn’t blow the monthly budget in search of thrills. Go for broke with the petrol model and you’ll reach 60mph in around six-and-a-half seconds thanks to 247bhp, or choose the 2.0-litre TDCi with 181bhp.
Don’t be fooled by that lower power figure, though. The diesel boasts 400Nm of torque – more than a Porsche 911 Carrera – so while it’s marginally slower away from the line, it offers crushing acceleration through the gears.
Both versions cost the same so there’s no penalty for craving the extra power of the petrol model. The diesel emits just 110g/km of CO2 and achieves up to 67mpg, though, so should prove cheaper to run for company car buyers and those with one eye on the environment.
The ST shares the Focus’s excellent reputation for safety, including its five-star Euro NCAP safety rating. The ST-2 features automatic headlights and a Quickclear heated windscreen, while ST-3 models include cruise control and a speed limiter to make long motorway drives less tiring.
All versions of the ST include Ford’s SYNC system that wirelessly connects to your smartphone so you can stream music and make calls at the wheel using voice controls. That means you can spend more time with your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.
